West
Indies defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in the final one-dayer of the
five one-day series at the Guyana national stadium last night.
Pakistan
have already won the series by winning the first three matches..
Batting first Pakistan scored 139 all out in 41.2 overs, Ravi Rampaul
took two wickets, only opener Mohammad Hafeez made 55 runs. Lendl
Simmons fired seven fours and three sixes to score 77 runs off 73 balls,
with Kirk Edwards made 40 runs.
The teams now move on to a two test match series beginning at the same
providence ground in Guyana on 12 May.
The
all-rounder, 34, will lead the side in all three formats of the game. He succeeds Kumar Sangakkara, who quit as national skipper in the
aftermath of the team's World Cup final defeat to India in April. The
selectors have postponed naming a replacement for Mahela Jayawardene as
vice-captain because a number of prospective candidates are injured.
All-rounder Angelo Mathews, 23, has been tipped to take over the role,
but he is nursing a side strain suffered during the World Cup semi-final
win over New Zealand. Dilshan has led his country once before, during
last June's tour of Zimbabwe, when his team won the final of a one-day
tri-series which also featured India.

India sealed a one-day international series win over the West Indies
with a three-wicket victory in Antigua.
The tourists lead the five-match contest 3-0 courtesy of a brilliant 86
not out from Rohit Sharma, overhauling West Indies' total of 225-8.
Andre Russell's 92 was the highlight of the day, striking eight fours
and five sixes from only 64 deliveries. India collapsed to 92-6 before
an 88-run stand between Sharma and Harbhajan Singh (41) guided them to
safety. West Indies captain Darren Sammy needed a victory at the Sir
Vivian Richards Stadium - built for the 2007 Cricket World Cup - to
maintain his side's hopes of overhauling India's 2-0 series lead. India
skipper Suresh Raina won the toss and elected to field and was instantly
rewarded with the wicket of Kirk Edwards in the second over when the
opener was caught behind off Munaf Patel for a duck. Lendl Simmons (45)
and Ramnaresh Sarwan (28) consolidated the innings in a solid
second-wicket partnership, but the latter's dismissal - unfortunately
run out after losing grip of his bat attempting to make his ground with
a quick single - triggered a middle-order crisis as the hosts collapsed
from 65-1 to 96-7 in 15 overs. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3-28) was the
instigator, dismissing Marlon Samuels, Danza Hyatt and Simmons in
successive overs, ably assisted by Harbhajan's frugal bowling from the
other end. But India's hopes of wrapping up the tail were dashed by a
sensational counter-attack from Russell, playing only his sixth one-day
international. The Jamaican rebuilt the innings alongside wicketkeeper
Carlton Baugh (36), adding 78 for the eighth wicket, unleashing an array
of clean, explosive strokes all around the ground. The 23-year-old
reached his maiden one-day international half century from 50 deliveries
before spanking an incredible 42 runs from his final 14 deliveries,
taking the West Indies to a creditable 225-8 from their 50 overs.
India's response began briskly through wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, but
Sammy removed opener Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in successive
deliveries in the eighth over. And the tourists continued to lose
wickets and were soon teetering at 92-6 in the 23rd over when Yusuf
Pathan was caught by Simmons off leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo.
But Harbhajan, whose batting skills have become a vital component of
India's lower order over the past 18 months, provided excellent support
for Sharma in an industrious seventh-wicket stand. Sharma was at his
dismissive best, imperious through the offside while Singh batted
intelligently, rotating the strike to give his established partner the
majority of the bowling. Harbhajan's dismissal in the 41st over brought
Praveen Kumar (25 not out) to the crease and the seamer maintained the
attacking intent, striking two lusty sixes as West Indies' hopes of
victory quickly evaporated.
And Sharma ensured India took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series
when he launched Kemar Roach over mid-on for four with 22 deliveries to
spare.
Soccer
Ronaldo
says he is retiring from soccer because he can’t stay fit anymore,
ending a stellar 18-year career in which he thrived with Brazil and some
of Europe’s top clubs.
The 34-year-old Ronaldo said
Monday a string of injuries in the past two years had kept him
from performing at a high level with Brazilian club Corinthians.
Ronaldo won two World Cups and
holds the record for most goals scored in the tournament. With
his uncanny sprints toward the goal and an incredibly accurate
finishing touch, he captivated fans everywhere he played,
including Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan. All despite
having to come back from three serious knee injuries that
threatened to end his career earlier than expected.
David
Nalbandian has been handed a wildcard for the Aegon Championships at
Queen's Club in June.
The Argentine, 29, has missed much of the season due to injury and will
skip the French Open because of a virus that has caused him to lose
weight. "It has been a frustrating time, but my recovery's going well
and I expect to be in good shape for the tournament," said Nalbandian,
referring to Queen's. The Aegon Championships takes place between 6-12
June.
A former Wimbledon finalist - Nalbandian was beaten by Australia's
Lleyton Hewitt in the 2002 final - the Argentine will use the Queen's
event as part of his preparation for the SW19 tournament this year. "I
enjoy playing on grass, and reaching the Wimbledon final in 2002 was a
special moment in my career. I hope to have a successful grasscourt
season this year."
Novak Djokovic
set his sights on dethroning Rafael Nadal at the French Open after
ending the Spaniard's unbeaten clay-court run in Madrid.
The Serbian defeated Nadal 7-5 6-4 to win the Madrid Open and take his
winning start to 2011 to 32 matches. And the two-time Australian Open
champion is now targeting Paris.
"Probably because of my winning streak and because I am in the shape of
a lifetime I am one of the favourites to win the title," said Djokovic.
"But Rafa has only lost one match there and I think he is still right up
there above everybody else.”It is my goal to try to go all the way at
Roland Garros and I am definitely setting my form up for that
tournament. "I just started the clay-court season. It was a perfect
start and I need to really stay dedicated and focused." Djokovic has now
won six titles in 2011, including the Australian Open, and stretching
back to last year his winning run is 34 matches. The victory on Sunday
also takes him past Bjorn Borg with the second-best start to an ATP
season on 32 victories, behind John McEnroe's 42 in 1984. That run came
to an end when the American lost the French Open final to Ivan Lendl,
after being two sets up, but Djokovic insists he is not thinking about
records. "I know this run I have is really incredible but I try not to
think about how long it's going to go and when I am going to lose," he
said. "It's about how many more wins I am going to have. I try to think
about winning."

FAST BOWLERS
They hunt in pairs
When two equally good bowlers
operate from two ends - the batsmen are bound to make mistakes and hence the old
saying " They hunt in pairs" is correct. The 1950"s followed by three decades
saw some excellent fast bowlers hunting together. On responsive pitches, they
were simply unplayable - the following attracted the attention of cricket lovers
and fans all over the world :
Lindwall & Miller of Australia, Statham & Trueman of England, Heine & Adcock and
Peter Pollock & Partridge of South Africa, Hall & Griffith of the West Indies.
The Pakistanis too produced two excellent pairs - the first being the fabled
pair of Imran & Sarfraz and the 2nd, Wasim & Waqar. These bowlers kept pressure
on the batsmen through their immaculate line and length backed by horrifying
pace. The 70's and 80's saw the rise of the West Indian pacemen, Andy Roberts,
Colin Croft, Joel Garner, Michael Holding and Malcolm Marshall. They were all a
delight to watch. The golden era from 1950 onwards also saw some excellent
bowlers performing the "demolition act" single-handedly - the immensely fit
Fazal Mahmood of Pakistan, whose leg-cutters were simply unplayable, the
left-arm quick, Alan Davidson of Australia, Graham McKenzie of Australia and
Richard Hadlee of New Zealand were among these great bowlers.
President Asif Ali Zardari announced award
of 5 hundred thousand rupees each to the players and 2 hundred thousand
rupees each to the coaches of the national cricket team of women which
won the gold medal in the 16th Asian games in Guangzhou, china.
He made this announcement at a reception hosted for the team players in
the presidency today to felicitate them on their win. President hoped
that the precedent set by the national women’s cricket team during 16th
Asian Games in Guangzhou would provide impetus to other potential women
athletes to bag more victories thus bringing laurels to the country. The
president while interacting with the team members congratulated them for
their historic victory and hoped that they would continue to make their
mark in the field and win more laurels for themselves and the country.
He said that the whole nation was proud of the young athletes not only
for their victory but also for introducing Pakistani women as a symbol
of talent and great potential. He said that their winning the gold medal
had cast the women of Pakistan in a bright light throughout the world.
The president said that had Shaheed Benazir Bhutto been alive today, she
would have been very happy to see our sportswomen being recognized
internationally. The members of the team thanked the president for the
support the government has been providing to them.

Hassan
Paracha creates history in Sindh Swimming Championship KARACHI-
Mohammad Hassan Paracha has created history in 50th Sindh Men’s Open
Swimming Championship by winning one gold, two silver and one bronze
medal.
The 12-year old Hassan while representing Karachi Club in the Sindh
men’s Open Swimming Championship which was concluded recently, has
performed brilliantly and won the title for Sindh Club after a period of
16 years.
Declared as the best swimmer of Sindh Club, Hassan Paracha is an
upcoming swimming star and the experts and organizers of the event have
speculated that he would write history in the national as well
international swimming. The swimming experts have hoped that Hassan is
quite capable of bringing the glory of victory to Pakistan in the future
national, regional and international events.
People have surprised to see that Paracha has only began his swimming
carrier only 18 months ago but with his sharp interest in the sports and
the competitive spirit of taking up the challenges has pushed him to bag
numerous titles.
Representing Karachi Club in the 50th Sindh Championship and 16th
National Swimming Championship, Hassan is likely to represent national
team in the regional and international events and bring the laurels to
the country.
“I’m thankful to my dad for regularly taking me to the training sessions
despite his busy business commitments. I’m also grateful to my school
Bayview High for giving me the support I need to excel” Hassan Paracha
commented.
The
legendary Hanif Mohammad had the ability to stay at the wicket for hours
with out losing concentration. His monumental innings of 337 compiled in
16 hours and 10 minutes earned Pakistan a creditable draw in the 1st
test at Bridgetown, Barbados in 1958. He courageously stood up against
some of the best bowlers of his time namely; Alec Bedser, Roy Gilchrist,
Wesley Hall, Alan Davidson, Freddie Trueman and Brian Statham. Despite
being
small in stature, his wide repertoire of strokes was unmatched and he
played every ball on merit.
This writer, as a school student was lucky to watch Hanif Mohammad in
action at the Dacca (Dhaka) Stadium in the 2nd test of 1961-62 series.
He scored a patient knock of 111 runs in the 1st innings followed by 104
in the 2nd innings there by becoming the first Pakistan batsman to score
a hundred in each innings of a test match.
Shujuddin
Another Pakistani batsman
who had this quality was Shujauddin Butt. Shuja, as he was popularly
known, spent 318 minutes for his 45 runs - a brave effort to
unsuccessfully ward off defeat against Australia in the 2nd test of
1959-60 rubber.
Today’s batsmen though adequately protected do not have the will or the
courage to stay and negotiate swinging, rising and turning deliveries
and hence they bring early demise to their innings. Test matches call
for immense concentration which unfortunately is lacking in the present
set of Pakistani cricketers.
