Inauguration Of Book Mera Quaid By Chaudry Noor-ul-Hassan Tanveer At PC In
Presence Of Nawaz Shareef
Addressing
the gathering on a special ceremony to celebrate the 100th birthday of
the great poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz at Aiwan-e-Sadr.
President Asif Ali Zardari has said the
defense of dignity and equality of mankind invariably invites the wrath
of conservative forces and dictators and this very commonality lies
between the legendary poet, and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The
President said Faiz lived and wrote for a purpose. He was not just a
poet. He was a first rate journalist, an accomplished editor, a fearless
trade unionist, an original thinker and above all, a kind teacher.
Many cities of Pakistan were worst hit by
devastating floods during the last week of July 2010. With hundreds
falling victims to death & millions displaced, the flash floods and
torrential rainfall brought catastrophic damage to infrastructure in
affected areas. The town buzzing with activity where men, women and
children were engaged in their usual chores were taken unawares and
rendered homeless within no time. Towns upon towns brimming with
exuberance of life were transformed into water land which in its wide
dimensions, no human eye could grasp. Heaps of rubble and debris and
corpses of birds, animals and articles of domestic use lay scattered all
over the place. The bridges were swept away & all road & rail links
disconnected. The cities were virtually drowned & inhabitants of many
cities were rescued through motor boats. Astounding sights and scenes of
human misery were projected by both electronic and print media.
The book, “Dobatey Shehr” (Sinking Cities) is a unique book authored by
the well-known writer, Dr. Asif Mahmood Jah relating to the devastation
and destruction caused by flood. Dr. Asif and his team visited the
regions of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Punjab, destroyed by the
torrential rains and atrocious floods many times, leading a team of
resolute and determined devotees who worked with requisite zeal and
enthusiasm to serve the devastated people, left with nothing to wear and
feed themselves as a result of the catastrophe, unprecedented in the
history.
Dr. Asif Jah has narrated the episode of his travelogue with immense
details. The book which is spread over 288 pages, covers the real story
of the sinking cities in two parts. The first part talks about the
flood-stricken areas of towns and cities inundated by water which
rendered millions of persons homeless, begging for immediate relief and
assistance.
The second part of the book describes the present situation of HUNZA
LAKE, narrates events leading to the disaster, subsequent developments
and highlights the efforts at the public and private level to help the
affected population by Hunza Lake. It speaks about the efforts of a team
of Doctors / volunteers led by Dr. Asif Mahmood Jah who battled against
weather conditions and found its way to far flung areas seldom visited
by any another similar team. In difficult and hazardous terrains, the
team contributed its full mite to people completely cut off from
humanity, thereby enabling them to discover some twinkling lights in the
enveloping darkness. It also describes the courage and determination
which the people of Hunza have shown during this disaster. Peculiar
manners of life, flowing rivers and lakes surrounded by snow covered
mountain peaks simple and serene social fabric make this territory a
unique and separate enclave on the earth which was the likely model for
the Sangri-La of James Hilton’s novel Lost Heaven where he describes it
as a country of peace and Contentment.
Dr. Asif Jah’s administrative abilities are commendable because of the
fact that on every chaotic occasion such as the horrible earthquake of
the 8th October, 2005 that shocked Azad Kashmir and a part of Khyber
Pakhtoonkhwa and later on Ziarat (Balochistan) including Malakand-Swat
military operations, he and his teams of Customs Health Care Society did
a wonderful job in alleviating the miseries of the displaced persons by
providing them the basic necessities of life and requisite medical
assistance. Similarly, they served the affectees of Hunza Lake
devastation with due purposefulness and sincerity.
Although a number of national and international organizations reached
the flood-affected areas to help the helpless at large, yet practical
efforts made by the author in this respect as published in form of the
book are unparalleled in the history of literature due to the fact that
readers remain unable to decide—either this book is a piece of literary
art or travelogue.
A thorough study of the book shows that while battling against hostile
weather conditions, it was owing to the courage and determination of the
author that his adventurous spirit succeeded his noble mission to help
the people of the flood-affected regions, even without bothering for
human limitations. It was the same spirit which—during every trip, he
also kept alive in his visiting team and members of the Customs Health
Care Society, Lahore where he also performs his duties as a doctor,
treating the maximum patients, free of cost entailing provision of
medicines. Besides, he also serves as a high official in a government
department. In wake of his multiple official and non-official
engagements, immediate decision of the author to set out on the journey
to help the needy and his experience in the flood-affected areas as
described in the book surprise every intellectual and the
non-intellectual equally.
However, the book, Dobatey Shehr gives full details of the services,
rendered by selfless workers of Dr. Asif Jah’s team of the Customs
Health Care Society, led by him with efficiency and devotion.
On the one hand, the book elaborates the painful truth that life is a
hardy perennial journey and human beings manage to survive amidst all
trials and tribulations like natural calamities, while on the other, it
gives a greater impetus, motivating all persons, particularly writers
and authors who can also implement their dreams by serving the humanity
during any catastrophe, provided they are well-determined and
courageous. In this context, the services rendered by Dr. Asif Jah in
connection with the flood-hit regions as described in the book make it a
historical document and a matchless asset for the present and coming
generations. In this connection, it is mentionable that people will keep
on living and dying either through natural calamity or meeting routine
fate of death, but the book, Dobatey Shehr will remain an endless lesson
for all persons, belonging to all the communities and religions.
The Book “DOBTAY SHEHR” will go a long way in satiating those who have
keen appetite for traveling and adventure. It has comprehensive but
concise body of information on culture and traditions of the affected
areas. Geographical features have been narrated with deep aesthetic
sense and literary richness. The landscape as well as woeful tales of
victims of the Hunza Lake and Flood affectees have been described in
such a manner that the reader comes in the orbit of felt experience and
feeling which urges him to emulate the Doctors/Volunteers and work in
the Hunza and flood affected cities.

Iqbal Ismail Calcuttawala, launched his first book,
“Footprints in the Sand- The Rise and Fall of
Walmarts of India” in an exclusive gathering of

Hotel in Karachi. The book details the achievements of the three
Bantva Companies that dominated Indian trade in the
early part of 20th Century, and the pivotal role
that Haji Habib Haji Peermohamed, Hoosen Kasam Dada
and Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood played in the
independence of Pakistan, under the leadership of
Quaid-E-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The book will
remind us of the long-forgotten role of the three
Bantva families that strengthened Pakistan
financially made Quaid-e-Azam’s dream a reality. As
the book 966covers many aspects of the life that can
stir up readers’ interest specially the personal
story of the writer and his forefathers. The event was presided by Mr. Arif Habib, Chairman,
Arif Habib Group of Companies. Mr. Haji Abdul Razzaq
Yakoob, Chairman, World Memon Organization (WMO),
was the Chief Guest of the launching ceremony. Other

Iqbal Ismail said, “Go back to Adamjee, Hoosen Kasam,
Haji Habib Seth and Adam Seth. What is the single
most important secret of their success? Trade
without boundaries. It is these entrepreneurs that
provided the resources for the creation of Pakistan
and the fulfillment of Quaid’s dream. This dream
will only be sustained by returning to the original
values. Let us create the South Asian Trading Union.
The rest will follow. Do not despair. Say with
belief: Yes, we can; yes, we will.” Interview “Yes, we can; yes, we will”Exclusive interview with
Mr. Iqbal Ismail Calcuttawala By Salman Salim Rajan IQBAL ISMAIL CALCUTTAWALA relates his memories about
the rise and fall of gigantic trade empires which he
named as the Walmarts of India. In his book
“Footprints in the Sand-The Rise and Fall of the
Walmarts of India”, he narrates how he saw small
businesses expand into great business empires and
how all this fell apart. His book touches the deeper
aspects of financially turbulent times when Pakistan
needed help and how these business clans helped to
bring glory to Pakistan. He discusses the services
rendered by the Memon Community for the welfare of
Pakistani people.
Salman Rajan: You have been an eminent Business
Manager and a Stock Advisor for over four decades.
What prompted you to write a book on history? IQBAL ISMAIL: Long before I became a known figure in
the Stock Market, I was the grandson of Haji Habib,
who was acknowledged as one of the pillars of Indian
Trade on sub-continental soil. The great Sir Adamjee
would not take a single decision without his advice.
Quaid-E-Azam had absolute faith and trust in him and
he valued Haji Habib’s input. In 1947, when Pakistan
appeared on the map of the globe, the Indian
Government, through its first High Commissioner,
invited him to return to India and continue his
business. It defies imagination that India should
invite a Muslim trader to come back and continue his
business. Such was the stature of this great maestro
of Indian Trade. It would have been an irony of fate
if I would not have written about him. These
insights prompted me to write about history.
SR: What impact do you foresee after the launch of
this book and what message does this book carry for
the readers? IQBAL ISMAIL: I foresee this book as a message of
peace. I have discussed in great detail about the
three friends of the Quaid - Sir Adamjee, Hussain
Kassam Dada and Haji Habib - who played key roles in
establishing the economy of Pakistan. In this book,
you will find the footsteps and chronology of major
institutions that were then and even now the
backbone of Pakistan’s economy. Consider MCB, HBL,
PNSC, KSE, PIA and EFU; the footprints of these
giants are everywhere. It is my honor to have inked
the birth, rise and fall of the Walmarts of
India. The message is clear! Shelley is one of my
favorite poets; I would like to quote one line from
his poem: “If Winter comes, can Spring be far
behind” Sixty years of despair! Will we see spring? Will
this winter end? Shelley thinks the winter will end
and spring will follow. I Agree. Yes, We Can and We
Will. Why do you think it is important to learn from our
history? Iqbal Ismail: We waited sixty years in search of
identity and today the people of Pakistan still
remain unhappy. Many think that we have lost our way
and there is no opportunity to get out of this maze. All you have to do is to refer to this glorious
history of ours. It should inspire us. The history
of these Walmarts of India makes it clear that yes,
there is a way out. The only question is whether we
have the courage to follow this path or not. I am
hoping that the young generation would be inspired
by this work. Instead of dreaming about a bright
future in the West, the youth would decide otherwise
and stay in Pakistan to fight for its glory.
SR: You’ve mentioned about IBA in your book, what
role did IBA play in your career? IQBAL ISMAIL: IBA was just an oasis in my journey. I
already was well established. I was the grandson of
Haji Habib. The world was open to me, but yes my
stay at IBA shaped my life and previously National
College broadened my horizons.
SR: What does this book mean to the Memon Community? IQBAL ISMAIL: This book is a code of excellence and
a proof of the success and glory Memon Community
brought to Pakistan. I have defined the main
characteristics and attributes of Memonhood in my
book.
SR: Will this book be translated in other languages
to enhance the readership? IQBAL ISMAIL: At the moment, our main concern is to
ensure the success of this edition; what follows
will be consequence of how successful we are in
marketing this book. Certainly, translation in other
languages is on the cards. But our prime objective
is to first make this edition a success story.
